B is for Bit

Click to learn about the A-Z Challenge, meet and greet with new bloggers!

Yes, it's day two. This sketch was much quicker than yesterday's. I decided that even if I'm not too happy with them, they're going up anyway. For me, sketching, painting, sculpting, writing, I'm not too great the first go round, I tend to vomit something up and hope it looks okay. I usually work several ideas up before I ever get one to the point I'm willing to show someone.

Well, not this month, it's a daily dose of first drafts.

I've lamented about my half written mess of a fantasy novel a lot lately. So, I thought I'd do a few character sketches to see if that helped me any.

This on is for a character named Bit, he's an ass. He's a big, strong, and manipulative. And serves as a minor antagonist to my story's good guys. He'd be a pushover if he didn't have someone smarter, meaner, and more powerful that keeps putting him in positions of power and protecting him from retribution from his actions.

I don't like this sketch... I should have done much better, I think I went too cartoony and I made him look a bit too preeny. I mean, is he checking his nails? Hitching a ride somewhere? Maybe I'll throw out a touch more realism for other characters when I come to them.

Check out my new boots!

I don't think preeny men keep one hand on the sword hilt. :)

Maybe he's looking for blood under his nails? You are too hard on yourself.

I think he looks like he's saying "Come on and meet my blade (insert insulting name here)." And I think the sketch looks pretty good.

I like this sketch! Great jaw line--and very masculine--I can tell by the sketch he is no nonsense.

I think the hand that is up is like he is telling someone to get the heck out of there --NOW. LOL. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Cheers, Jenn

You should say the heck with it and just buy the Sims 2 to make all your characters. Cuz that looks so much better, LOL.

I'm still in awe of your attempt to do 26 sketches in a month. He looks like your characterization of him.

I think it's damn good. I'm thinking he's telling someone to get off their ass and get to work. Or hit the road.

I did a lot of art growing up (I miss it, although I still will paint a mural in a child's room for the right price and if I have time). I always had issues with hands and fingers. My characters looked like someone poured acid on their hands.

You do a great job, though. How did you get so good at drawing hands?

I'm with Jay -- it lookis GREAT! I thought he was giving some orders and gesturing over his shoulder. Very strong jaw-line. :)

Yeah, he kinda looks like he's deciding which person to kill next.

dude! people should know a sketch is a sketch! i think you did well. i like your anatomy, but i see your crit as well... reminds me of b&b's gaston, and you're saying that isn't right...
i actually would love to have his boots. :)

The way he's holding his hand, he could actually be holding an axe up if you put one in there. Like...poised, ready to destroy some monster! But yeah...you could also turn the picture preeny.

In my opinion, the atmosphere would come out in the background. If you surrounded him in flowers and not severed heads...it would look very gay.

With the way his hand is, he could be saying, "The rest of the bodies are out back."

I think he looks like he's telling someone to get up. The hand on the sword serves as a minor threat to what will happen if they don't.

Man, he looks REALLY tall. I'm not being funny, that's the impression I get.

What a clever name for such a strong big guy. Nice work!

Love the idea of doing character sketches for the A-Z! What a great way to make sure you get some work done on your other projects at the same time...hmmm....

Fun idea for the A-Z. I just signed on to the A-Z challenge, nearly at the last minute, but I'm trying to visit every blog at least once.

Love it! I am in such awe of people who can sketch. I think you are pretty critical of your own work :-) Nicely done! I will be back :-)

You can definitely see his arrogance. Reminds me a bit of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast!

A great description and you can see it right in the drawing, sometimes those guys that are a bit of an ass aren't all that bad though.

I think your sketch is great~ I thought of Gaston in Beauty n' the Beast, too~ Well Done

What a great theme! He does look like an ass and is pretty rugged, like a brigand, even though his new boots look expensive.

Splinters? I like that you just blurted out that Bit is an ass. lol I think his sketch looks cool.

Jenni Steel said...

I like the rugged type. Your work is very good, I like his boots nice and high above the knee. Very sexy!

He's inviting someone for a wee dram and there is an ale house a mile back on the corner and they're serving blood - drinks are on me!

Okay, don't hate me but the first thought that came to mind was Guston (spell?) from Beauty and the Beast. I have too many kids, sorry. I LOVE it!

My thoughts were the same as Ciara's. Nice sketch.
