It's FAKE!

I read a fair amount of science related items and think of myself as pretty darn savvy when it comes to being exposed to internet memes that promote made up things as true. But, when I was first shown the newly famous pic of Earth, Venus and Jupiter as seen from Mars, I didn't think I was seeing anything phony. I don't recall swearing it was real, either. But I've been seeing this thing tweeted and retweeted so much lately I thought I'd share this article by the great Phil Plait where he calls it as a hoax.

FAKE! Probably.

I don't think the images from Mars are quite that clear, either.

I don't see how, even if it was real, it would be that impressive. I mean there is plenty of amazing photography from space that is way cooler than this shot, real or not.

I guess I'm not much of a science geek because I'm not that impressed by the Curiosity pictures. All it shows is a yellowy sky and a bunch of gray dirt. Shit, you could go to Arizona or New Mexico or Utah or somewhere like that and get pretty much the same thing. Now if you find some little green (or gray) men then I'd start getting interested.

aw man. i hadn't seen this, but it's a shame people are faking mars images... intentional misinformation is a real jerky thing to do.

It may be fake, but it's amazing that we are getting images from Mars. I would never have believed it possible. Curiosity is one helluva machine.

I hadn't run across this before. I think the whole internet is fake.
Or we're all just dreaming.
I'm not sure which.

Ah Phil Plait. My main goal in writing is to never make his bad astronomy list.

I haven't seen this picture before. It does look fairly real, though the ground is a bit red.

If this was real, it would've been on the news and they'd be making a big deal out of it. Oh well...

I saw this on FB a lot too. I wasn't sure if it was fake or not, but I've seen some incredible pics from Mars.

How easy it is to pass off fakes these days. Maybe we all want them to be real.
