It's Not Possible

I had this 3k word long post prepared about the coming destruction of society, and maybe humanity, but after reading it again I decided it needs another pass or two before I can let that one see the light of day. I go to some dark places there.

So, instead, I want to point out that I worked (wasted) my weekend trying to expand my horizons by entering the 3D art workplace.

Well, I don't want to chalk that up as a loss yet, but I did not have a good time. I got Poser 9 recently, thinking I could design and build 3D figures. I chose this program because it was relatively cheap and supposedly, great for beginners.

Sigh. I have no idea what I was doing, but I was not creating art, it was not user friendly, and in a lot of ways, extremely frustrating, not to mention, buggy, as it crashed many times, deleting my progress each time.

So I have nothing to show for all my work, nothing. If I knew it would have been like this I would have just gotten Blender or something, at least that one is free. But, I'll be trying it some more, which is why I'm not ready to call it a loss yet. A lot of my frustration is that they seem to be pushing me to use the prebuilt models, which doesn't feel very artistic to me.

Oh well.

Those programs have a steep learning curve. Try ZBrush or 3D Studio Max if you really want to fry your brain.

I get it that you are frustrated, but that's an awesome thing to try out. Let us know if you find something usable.

I can hardly use my ancient version of Paint Shop Pro.

Programs with steep learning curves frustrate me. Although, usually, once you get past the learning curve you become an expert. There is no middle ground. You know what I mean?

I have to get my computer savy son to do things like that. I'm with grumpy, I can't even use paint.

Good luck getting it all figured out :)

BTW, the review for Dead God will be on my blog tomorrow. Hope it lifts your spirits.

Well, you tried, and trying's the important thing, provided, of course, that you didn't want to really achieve anything, because if you DID want to get something done, then trying is worthless and you didn't come close.

World's worst pep talk. I once thought that I could make song mashups -- I got REALLY excited by the prospect of that and bought a program for them and loaded it into my laptop and 12 hours later had a 10-second snippet of a song that wasn't worth the effort. I still have the program, because I can't bring myself to throw it out.

That, though, was not as guilt-inducing/waste of timing as the time I tried to learn bagpipes, which is for another day.

My point: the road to self-improvement is littered with the soda cans of attempts, so litter away, and leave the trash behind. You'll end up in a beautiful location uncluttered by everything you left behind.

(This message obviously not brought to you by the environment.)

Did you try watching some videos on YouTube or something to watch it in action? I'm pretty visual, and I learn by watching others do it correctly.

But I don't have the patience to go through what you went through. I would have chucked the program out the window a long time ago!

I have enough problems with getting things figured out in 2-D, so I'm impressed with your perseverance. If you can make it work it sounds like the possibilities could be amazing.

did you read I'm still trying (by trying I mean doing nothing at all about it and complaining that I don't know) to achieve a link thing so I will never throw stones. You have moved closer to understanding through this weekend than you were before.

Well, as you know I've had my own software headaches =) The only user friendly software is MS Word! HA!

You'll figure it out I'm sure... (being optimistic for you!)
