I'm Trying Real Hard...

... But stuff keeps happening in real life that tries to derail me from writing. I'm at around 42k words and am running out of time to get the word count I wanted to for the month, which I'm sure you've already guessed is 50k.

All the other novels I've ever written have been in the 60-70k range when done. Very short. This one is shaping up to be a much longer project. Hard to tell though, I may end up cutting a lot. But I'm thinking it will still be around 120k when done. Long by my standards. And I think at the upper limits of what any publisher would even look at for a paper book from a unknown author.

So, here's hoping I have a couple of days free of too many other distractions, because... damn... you just wouldn't believe the stuff that's been happening.

42K is a great start.

Yeah I think they usually want 80-100K. Or that's what they say. Then they'll publish some first-timer's 900-page middle grade vampire opus.

Yeah I would believe the stuff that's been happening. Congrats on reaching 42K though! I hit zero again this year.

Then ignore all else and get it done! And even if you don't, you're almost halfway there.
Wondered where you were this week. If I don't see a neurotic Rusty post or comment, I become concerned.

I think you should write about the stuff that's been happening rather than telling us that we wouldn't believe it.

Show, don't tell.

I wish I was the kind of writer that could put down 120K words in a first draft. My first drafts are about 25K words-- pathetic.

Are you a superhero? Is that it? Has something happened to the world? You can tell us.

If you read my comment on Grumpy's blog today, you'll see that indie-published genre fiction is where it's at, publishing-wise. (That was a hipster way to put it, right?) So maybe don't worry about what a Big Six would say, because they'll take 52.5% of the cover price before paying you, as Bloom County used to say:

Diddly/Squat.

You're a good enough writer that you shouldn't worry about whether some bored English Lit major living in New York and supported by Mummy's new husband's money likes your manuscript. My new mantra: WRITE WHAT YOU WANT TO WRITE.

Bah! Again, I have nothing to say that hasn't been said! Darn you Michael and Briane!

42k is an excellent amount. I can't push my writing. Life is too much fun, so I write a few chapters a day. Good luck. :)

Oooo...I'm intrigued to find out what is happening, because I hope it is nothing bad. Hugs if it is. In the meantime, I will be forced to make stuff up about what craziness abounds. Stuff like you are the lost son of a Viking mafioso family, made to live in exile because you accidentally sold Thor's actual hammer at a garage sale. You've been holed up with three prostitutes and a three legged dog named Biff in a North Dakota hotel, writing Hallmark cards since the late 80s. And now you've been called back to the flock because a rival family has found Thor's hammer at a Walmart in Memphis and is threatening to take over the world. Is that close at all?

Congrats on the word count. I think 42K is awesome.

Congratulations on 42k! That's still a lot of words.
